Picton Ferry Precinct Redevelopment
KiwiRail is in the early stages of planning to replace the current fleet of three ferries with two new, large rail-enabled ferries from 2024. The current ferries need to be replaced due to their age. They also need to accommodate future growth in passenger numbers and freight volumes.
The terminal precincts in both Wellington and Picton will need to be redeveloped to accommodate the new ferries. There will need to be changes to berths, landside facilities, and rail and roading interfaces. KiwiRail is working closely with partners at Port Marlborough, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Marlborough District Council to maximise community benefits.
All project partners are committed to sustainable development practices to deliver balanced social, environmental and economic benefits to Picton and the wider Marlborough community.
